Online Math Supplements

Sumdog [link]

An online resource where students can play interactive games to help build Math and Language Arts Skills. Sumdog's learning engine adapts its questions to each student's ability helping teachers deliver Common Core State Standards. Aimed at grades 1-8 [Covers number operations through to simple algebra].

Math Playground [link]

This is a collection of math games, sorted by topic and content. They were designed to correlate with Common Core State Standards in Mathematics.

A collection of online, randomly generated worksheets that provide additional calculation practice for many second grade math topics (aligned with the Common Core standards). Use them as you need!

Learning Targets for 2nd Grade Mathematics

       A pivotal step toward success in school (or really anything) is a firm grasp on the expectations of what is to be learned.  Thanks to the nearly universal adoption of the Common Core State Standards (Forty-Five states so far), there is a unified set of expectations that were designed to build upon each other all throughout one's educational career. 

       Below are the standards that guide instruction, assessment, and the progression of math all the way through high school.

Operations and Algebraic Thinking

• Add and subtract within 20.
• Represent and solve problems involving addition and subtraction.
• Work with equal groups of objects to gain foundations for multiplication.

    Number and Operations in Base Ten

• Understand place value.
• Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract.

    Measurement and Data

• Measure and estimate lengths in standard units.
• Relate addition and subtraction to length.
• Work with time and money.
• Represent and interpret data.

    Geometry

• Reason with shapes and their attributes.

    Mathematical Practices

1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
4. Model with mathematics.
5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
6. Attend to precision.
7. Look for and make use of structure.
8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Homework Supplements

       The internet has an amazing plethora of resources to help students learn and practice their academic skills.  Realizing that it is hard to find the right tool among so many options, I have decided to compile a list of online resources, and strategies that parents and students can use at home to supplement the learning done in the classroom.

       As the year progresses, there will be less and less homework being sent home.  It is my goal that the focus of work done in the home be the reading log and the daily writing response journal.  While these will be the only required pieces of homework, I felt it would be pertinent for me to provide avenues for independent study and academic support.
